La peinture du mois

An artist to discover, whose works have never crossed the auction threshold, but have only found refuge in the collections of museums and collectors in France, Germany, and America! And now, they are up for sale.

Alexander Salaueu (September 13, 1926 – May 23, 2021) remains a fascinating enigma in the art world. Few works have survived from his extensive artistic repertoire, estimated at nearly 1,500 oil paintings and 3,500 watercolors. Most of his work, especially his lyrical abstract pieces, date from the later period of his career. The latter are exclusively held by prestigious museums and discerning collectors, highlighting their extraordinary rarity.

Born in Soloni, in the Novgorodsky region, Salaueu had a youth marked by commitment. At the age of 17, he actively participated in the resistance movement and was decorated with the Red Star order, also receiving commemorative medals as a great patriot of the war in 1945. He remained mobilized in Tallinn from 1945 to 1949, with no forewarning of his future artistic career.

Meeting Ado Vabbe was pivotal. The latter introduced him to art, especially to avant-garde abstract. In 1955, Salaueu successfully attended the courses at the Saint Petersburg Art Academy and then those at the Belarusian Institute of Theatre Art. By 1965, he became the set designer and producer for the Vitebsk Academic Drama Theatre, succeeding Mark Chagall and becoming a renowned painter himself.

Alexander Salaueu holds a unique place in the artistic landscape of the second half of the 20th century. His intense creations, artistic expertise, and circle of influence, which included artists such as Pablo Picasso, earned him almost automatic recognition as one of the greatest contemporary artists. His works are sought after worldwide, mainly held in the USA, Germany, Italy, and France – New Brunswick USA, Tretyakov Museum, Vitebsk National Museum, Minsk National Museum, Minnesota Museum, etc.

It’s worth noting that his lyrical abstract works are of exceptional rarity, mostly unfindable. Alexander Salaueu never sought recognition, as it came naturally to him. Throughout his life, he continued the artistic task begun by pioneers such as Malevich, Chagall, and Kroushkin, thereby perpetuating the tradition of the second school of Paris.
